Dr. Edythe London. As a neuroscientist trained in molecular pharmacology, has worked to integrate biochemical pharmacological techniques with studies of regional brain function and ultimately with studies of human behavior. The goal of the work is to contribute to the understanding of how specific neurochemical deficits influence behavior, in order to guide the development of clinically useful medications. Over the last 20 years, her contributions have been primarily in the area of substance abuse, but have included the development of new approaches and probes for the study of brain function. These technical advances extend beyond the area of substance abuse and are applicable to a variety of neuropsychiatric disorders. Using positron emission tomography (PET) scanning and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), her current projects concern dependence on methamphetamine, nicotine, and alcohol. The questions addressed in human research relate to the links between genetics, cognitive function, affect and vulnerability to drug abuse and the maintenance of dependence. Correlative studies in animal models of addiction will relate altered neuronal function with gene expression, as affected by drug treatments. The goal is to develop a better understanding of the neurobiology of addiction, using a translational approach toward rational design of therapeutics.
Dr. Buyean Lee joined the Laboratory of Molecular Neuroimaging in August of 2004. His CV is available online in Word format.
John Monterosso, Ph.D. is an experimental psychologist. His graduate work was
completed at the University of Pennsylvania where he also carried out
post-doctoral research with Anna Rose Childress and George Ainslie. His
primary research combines behavioral and neuroimaging methodologies to study
judgment and decision making, especially in relation to the problem of drug
addiction.
Dr. Steven Berman has been at UCLA since 1990. He holds the position of Research Psychologist in the Division of Digestive Diseases and the Department of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences at the David Geffen School of Medicine. Dr. Berman is also a member of the Brain Research Institute, the UCLA Collaborative Centers for Integrative Medicine (CCIM), and is head of neuroimaging for the UCLA Center for Neurovisceral Sciences and Women's Health. He has made contributions to the psychophysiology of substance abuse vulnerability, developmental cognitive electrophysiology, and brain imaging of functional gastrointestinal disorders. He is currently co-Principal Investigator of a National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) study of electrophysiological, neuropsychological, personality and genetic risk factors in children of alcoholics and Principal Investigator of an industry sponsored trial assessing central effects of Tegaserod with functional magnetic resonance imaging.
Dr. Josh Hoffs
